The bike (security) cage at one of my work places has both traditional stands (below) and vertical stands (right). One morning I ride up and see that the former are all empty, the morning cyclers having chosen the stands where you have to lift up the bike. 
The face value of the vertical stands is space conservation, but I suspect that most of us have other things in mind.
